I'm very much looking forward to seeing the finished piece. My knowledge of restoration would fit on a post stamp so your photos are very interesting!

My goodness, that ivory looks gorgeous ! I really admire your skill! And now I want your pen. And the crimson one when you do it :notworthy1:

Reflecting on this, I'm interested to hear how the new finish stands up over the course of months of use. I hope it lasts at least as well as a factory finish, but my long-past experience with painting of gaming figures suggests caution.

However long it stands up, it's an ambitious effort and a laudable result. If there's a negative tone here, it's mainly the result of envy.

It's mainly pens, just now....

Thanks Ernst for your interest and comments. The Waterman lacquer took very little effort to remove using 1000 and 1200 grit paper. I am also unhappy with my brush finish and because the Ivory is not available in spray I have today ordered Humbrol spray gloss enamel varnish. I will rub down between coats of Ivory and apply this varnish as the top layer. I am more a fiddle about pen person than a producer of a serious functional unit so I doubt it will get much use when finished. It's also nice for others to see something being worked on by an amateur and might get them interested in having a dabble.

I am fairly happy though new(er) plated hardware would have made it look a little better. In the main I am happy with this first attempt. This said in the flesh it looks and feels nice.

:notworthy1: I am in awe. It looks fantastic. Will you be attempting the crimson any time soon?

Thank you, yes, but while I have a donor pen in mind (CareneNibRepair, Black Sea) I might hang around ebay for a week to see if another one shows up. They are becoming expensive on the bay and finding one in poor con is rare.

Force, reviewing your effort because of a new reaction I noticed you left one small detail. It would be nice if the "jewel" in the barrel-endcap would be white also.

Thank you all for the comments. I have yet to find another, in poor condition, to commence the other colour.

There were 2 reasons I did not colour the "jewel". One being that it is Black on all Carene's and I wanted to keep that aspect the same and 2, it's impossible to remove it for roughing up prior to painting.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
