Download Freemind or xMind from the net. These are free and help you draw some nifty mindmaps. The theory is that mind is much more amenable to graphical and two dimensional information such as a map rather than a sequential list. Mindmap help planar layout of your concepts, thoughts and ideas.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Off topic: Are you by any chance the author of a book on Hamiltonian Chaos?

No, I am not. Here is the link to the person who wrote the Hamilton Chaos, it was Georges Moisevitch Zaslavsky http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_M._Zaslavsky. My other family name is Merkel, however one of my cousins who was studying at the A&M University of Texas and who was preparing back then a mba met him at one of his conferences.

Unfortunate! I could have used your (I mean, his) help on few issues, I am stuck with in chaos. Looks like have to do more calculations all by myself and so need more pens. :puddle:

Just passed 50. 51 to be exact.

Loving the chart, what program did you use?

An app called Mindnode. It is very simple but elegant.

Here's my question, for those with more than 500 pens: what storage method or system do you use? And are you happy with it?

Thanks,

How many fountain pens do you have?

I have no idea how many I have but I do know that if I get a few more pens, I'll be closer to having enough.

"Enough" is a figure I am approaching asymptotically ;)

The statistics looks, as expected, Gaussian. However, there is this interesting patch of 30-50 pen-range: number of members in this range is smaller than the numbers in 10-30 and 50-100 ranges. Either this could be an artifact of not-so-scientific binning of data which has been chosen or the fact that this 30-50 range is a kind of unstable state: once a collector is in this range more often than not he/she tends to acquire more pens. More data/votes may help understand this.

A mere 12 currently but there is an Edison Collier on its way to me very soon (hopefully). As that will make an "unlucky 13" looks like I have an excellent excuse to start eyeing up my next purchase :ltcapd:

Oh, dear. I hate it when I'm force to face my addiction.

The last time I answered this question, I think I had ~50 pens. Now...

My pen storage cabinet holds 64 pens: full, plus a few skinny pens are two to a slot.

My Levenger 12-pen display is full of colorful Lamy's (mostly Safaris with a few Al-Stars).

I have a twenty or so pens in another storage drawer.

Then there are the two desk pens and the 6-7 inked pens I carry with me.

Yup, that's over 100. Currently, my most expensive is a CS Bespoke. Many were in the $50-150 range, but there are a good number of Lamys and cheaper Pilots, etc.

Every time I think I'll sell some pens (like my Pelikan M2xx demos, which I haven't used in several years), I start to think about how sorry I might be down the road that I didn't keep them.

Sigh...

Not enough yet...but of course my wife says I have too many...

(Unfortunately) I also collect tobacco pipes, and she also cannot understand why I need to have more and more...

Ladies...

Excuse me if you are among the exceptions:)

I have about 12, including one cranky old Montblanc that drives me nuts, a Lamy Vista, a Pelikano JR that I hate cause it's too big and my beloved Mabie Todd. Of course, I am going shopping on Wed so that number will probably go up soon.

I also just enabled a co-worker who admired my Lamy but balked at the price. When I showed her the Pelikano she liked everything but the color so I am getting her a red one.

I have 11 pens, and still want MOAR pens! I have 3 pens in regular rotation though, plus one that's always on a pad of paper in the living room, next to the phone.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
