Yowsers! I'm not easily impressed anymore, but some of those are spectacular.

Christof,

That is a very nice specimen - is there a story to it?

I know I had to really work hard to complete my Tortoise Pel (the cap hunt) which make it all the more worthwhile.

Vik, there is no special story behind this pen except that it is a first year model (1937) with the old nest on cap top. I just have seen it and thought it could be a nice adition to my tortoises. The price was okay but not a gift. But what I really would love to ad to my collection is a tortoise Pelikan 100. Perhaps, one day I cand trade one of my kidneys for one...

PS: Do I understand right, the LeBoeuf fills like a Chilton? And why is there a blind cap?

Playing the definition of "best" pretty loosely, here are 10 of my very favorite pens (I picked 5 vintage and 5 modern):

black and white LeBoeuf 75 with stub nib; Waterman turquoise Patrician; very early Waterman eyedropper in uncommon chasing pattern; Esterbrook dollar-fifty pen in blue cracked ice; Sheaffer "first year" Crest with sterling silver cap; Omas Arco; Omas Galileo; Pelikan White Tiger; Omas Arlecchino; Delta/Chatterly Oro-based orange/black marbled #2 of 2.

Greg, your Estie Cracked Ice is one sweet pen. I didn't know that they came in that color!

This LeBoeuf is pure pleasure!Just great.

Me too have a new pen which could eventually affect my selection of top ten. But be patient and let's see what happens in the next few days, weeks... at "what's up at Christof's"

Okay, perhaps we also have to take account of this:

Trying to get this thread going again.

Here is a group picture of my recent favorites. Each one was a revelation in itself.

Left to right:

Osmia: Nice sturdy take on the button filler awaiting a retip of its fine flex nib

Astoria Dux: A superb pen with an uncommon filling mech of twist filler

Parker Vac: I got it for the transparency and fell in love with its flex nib. (Do silicon sacs for these exist?)

Matador: This one I got from my pen enabler & friend, Christof, sporting one of my best F flex nibs

Barclay: Biggest surprises of all - one of the very best quality. Mostly BHR construction and design that wants me to get more Barclays...

Cheers

Thanks for keeping this thread alive, Vik!

And congrats to your new and excellent pens.

The Astoria and his filling mechanism are amazing and reminds me to a Matador that I had once...

The Matador Turbo was fitted also with this twist/push mechanism. For the Swiss market, the Matador was called Turbino, because the trademark Turbo has already been registered.

I am not sure about "best", but here are some of my more interesting pens.

From Left: Waterman's 0552 Gold-Filled Filigree Overlay over RHR

Waterman's Patrician Emerald Green - nice color, most of these are pretty dark

Waterman's 452 Hand Engraved Vine Sterling Silver Overlay

Waterman's 452 Sterling Silver Filigree Overlay over RHR

Waterman's Patrician Turquoise

Waterman's 94 in Rose Ripple

Waterman's 0574 Gold-Filled Overlay Pansy Panel

Wahl-Eversharp Deco Band in Chased BHR - a fairly rare model

Wahl-Eversharp Coronet with Dubonnet Pyralin Inserts

Wahl-Eversharp Deco Band in Lazulitic Blue

Okay, that's ten. The one on the right is a bonus, since it isn't really a production pen. It is a Parker Duofold Flat-top with a custom cap and barrel made from antique ivory.

WOAH! Love the theme of the collection, but I HAVE to know what the story is behind that Parker Duofold.

Whaat... you dont have that Matador anymore :(

I thought you liked it so much I deemed it inappropriate to ask if you'd let it go. Oh well.

The real reason why these are fast becoming my favorites

I'm sorry Vik, I had to sell... collecting vintage Pelikans is expensive, you know...

There seems to be a problem with my flickr linked picture currently. Here it is again:

There's a new pen in my collection...and I probably have to switch one of my top10...hard decisions again...

Do we mean Best Writers? Best Lookers? Is most expensive = "Best"? Pens I think Others would appreciate Best? Pens I would be least likely to divest myself of for fear of never finding another like it?

You just have to many pens, am I right :)

Too many pens?

You'll have to explain that to me, I'm not familiar with that concept.

First I'd like to thank you for your interest in this thread.

The concept is not complicated. Just post a pic or a list of ten pens of your collection from which you think they are best of. This is a very personally decision. Worth, beauty, writing qualities, can be criterias, but don't have to. As I wrote in the initial post: Think of the pens you would like to keep, if you hda to reduce your collection. Hope this helps.

I think that was a joke, lol. I only have one pen right now, it's a simple black Sheaffer Nononsense from the mid 90s. I just decided I'd like to maybe collect more FPs this month, so I'm barely starting on my voyage. But I liked seeing a lot of these pens, they give me ideas!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
