Your 10 Best Pens

Recommended Posts

Have you ever tried to categorize your collection? And have you ever tried (only in your imagination of course!!!) to reduce it to the best 10, the "top ten" of your collection?

...well, I did and it's not an easy task I can tell you. It's quite hard to be honest. Questions over questions: Is a "Golden Web" better than a "Maxima"? Is a very rare Pelikan 400 Green/Green better than a worthy Pelikan 500NN? Is a "T1" more worth than a "Duofold Deluxe"? I really don't know but nonetheless, I did aranged 10 of my best pens and took a picture. Here it is. Please show us your "top ten" also ...because it's fun and helps you to focus your collection ...maybe.

Fantastic collection! I sadly cannot join as I'm not often in contact with all my pens. Furthermore, I tend to classify the pens based on what they mean to me, and how well they write... but thanks for the idea, I'll think about it for a while and if possible post some pictures!

What do you mean by 'best'? Do you mean ten favourite, most expensive, the ones that see the most use ...

well, you are right, "best" is a really personally definition, so it's up to you, whatever you think is best.

How about this: What was if you would have to give away all your pens, except the 10 you mostly want to keep...?

PS: Your "grail pens" sounds interesting...

PPS: looking forward for your pens!

Playing the definition of "best" pretty loosely, here are 10 of my very favorite pens (I picked 5 vintage and 5 modern):

black and white LeBoeuf 75 with stub nib; Waterman turquoise Patrician; very early Waterman eyedropper in uncommon chasing pattern; Esterbrook dollar-fifty pen in blue cracked ice; Sheaffer "first year" Crest with sterling silver cap; Omas Arco; Omas Galileo; Pelikan White Tiger; Omas Arlecchino; Delta/Chatterly Oro-based orange/black marbled #2 of 2.

This are gorgeous pens.

I specially like your LeBoeuf and the Sheaffer's Crest. Just great!

Thanks a lot for sharing.

After a bit of thinking, I decided to go for the 10 most remembered/missed. When I think of a pen I feel like writing with, these often come to mind. More or less ordered chronologically.

post-12931-0-74257300-1325941515.jpg

1) Conway Stewart Wellington, Sterling trim, IM Nib

2) Montblanc WE Edgar A. Poe, M Nib

3) Lamy 2000, B Nib

4) Pelikan M200, with old style 14K B nib

5) Parker 45, Ball nib

6) Montblanc 124, Flexible F nib

7) Eversharp mechanical pencil (you can't always write with a FP ;) )

8) Pelikan 120, M nib

9) Stephens 160 Lever filler. Juicy smooth medium nib

10) Parker Duofold Senior Streamline, Flexy Canadian F nib

Extra:

I can't take a picture of my Nakaya now. It should probably have been in the place of the mechanical pencil :cloud9:

I'll probably update the picture in a few days when I get near the other pens ;)

Christof, this is a fun but mind-boggling game. These are hard decisions~ I will take pictures when I see them again next month, can't wait.

But this is my list (not in any particular order):

  1. Danitrio Sakura Fubuki <<< Was my grail pen, and still is.
  2. Danitrio Takenuri
  3. MB 149 MOP Star
  4. MB 234PL
  5. MB 236 BB
  6. Pelikan 400 Grey
  7. OMAS Filarmonica
  8. OMAS Mezzo Arco Bronze
  9. Soennecken 507 Blue (the one I got from you)
  10. Soennecken 111 Extra

** I am thinking of substituting the Arco with the Swan I got from you...LOL~

Good question. Given the fact that it writes very well and is superbly balanced, the IBIS supposedly should be on the list. But there's one drawback, it's too fragile. I feel I can't take it to places without fearing of damaging it; I don't know if the black IBIS are made the same way or same quality, but the barrel thickness for the marbled ones are just too thin. If its wall thickness was made like the 100/400s, then it would definitely go on the list.

Have you ever considered selling you Pelikan San Francisco? Since the color doesnt come through on your picture, i thought maybe you might want to get rid of it. puddle.gif

:)

No, I haven't. I was actually very fortunate to get it. I bought it at the Ohio Pen Show about five or six years ago. I was just starting out with fountain pens and fell in love with the color and design. I didn't know it was a Special Edition, rare, or anything like that. Over the years that followed I have ended up with seven of the City Series pens. They are just wonderful - beautiful and functional all in one.

Here's my list of 10 best pens:

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j66/sexauerw/TenBestPens.jpg

Several of these make the list because of their wonderful italic or stub nibs. Those pens are the CP4 Richmond, the Vertigo, the Pilot Custom 823, the silver Imperial Touchdown and the Stipula. Fantastic writers all! The others are all quite nice writers too, but just plain round nibs. Except that I don't really know how the Targa Ivoire Spiral writes, that one is still mint and uninked. I'm really afraid of staining it and it's not like I don't have enough other Targas to play with. :roflmho:

I couldn't narrow it down to a top ten but instead, here are ten that are really close but not quite in the very top grouping.

http://www.fototime.com/85EBCF69D082F54/standard.jpg

Beginning at the top and going clockwise: an ST Dupont Medici, MB 146, Pelikan 800, Wahl/Eversharp Golden Symphony NOS, Montegrappa large Privilege Deco, Waterman Gentleman SS, Parker Big Red, OMAS D-Day and Bibliotheque Nationale and a Ferrari da Varese Bottecelli.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
