Montblanc.

The ink is pretty good too.

The MB is very good, and the ink is not too bad either. Never used the other one.

The MB bottles are great! I use all the empties to store all my favorite inks. And the ink that the bottles hold isn't that bad either.

Twsbi is an ink well designed in part for Twsbi pens.

It has advantages with a gadget so you can fill a pen when you have low ink.

Many other ink bottles have a problem with the last of the ink.

I don't know how MB is with the last of the ink...I've not run out yet.I got months before I run out.

I have a a number of twin and single inkwell sets and some inkwells.

I highly suggest in modern times one buys twist on cap ink wells, or they if they are flip tops wells; will dry up on you, because now, we do not use just one or two inks, but 25 to 50...if not now, soon. 12 inks are no where near enough.

The flip top inkwell will dry out...unless you can come up with an ink that you use all the time in at least one pen.

I doubt if you are going to do that with out planning.

If I am going to bring down an ink well or a set. I have to plan what ink I will be using in some 3-4 pens, or if I'll be using in 6-8 pens for a double or twin set.

I need not think long term....no one does that has more than 10 inks.

One changes one's inks like one changes one's underwear...it is not 1890 before washing machines when one changed every week; and kept the same ink always in one's wells.

Twsbi is a good ink well, even if I do not have one. I will buy one some time.

I like the different shades....I do not mix inks. It looks like a real good way to do that too.

I have one press top ink well, and ever since my first ink well dried out I have looked for classy twist top ink wells.

Twsbi is not quite as classy as the following. But I can see some one with some talent with wood coming up with two Twsbi wood blocks for ink well and pen holder... I could come up with three ideas in three seconds...did...but don't have a garage.

This is a good ink well. The problem is with insert it takes 50 ml ink, with out it 70, and today we don't use one ink enough to load this.

I'd like to load it with a glowing color and back light it. :cloud9:

Look for twist top or press seal inkwells.

The Montblanc Ink of Joy / Friendship / Love bottles are nice. (Joy pictured below).

They are only 30ml but twice as deep as the J.Herbin Bottles. This one will be reused for the 30ml Diamine inks.

And I can get 2 and a bit of these for the price of the TWSBI, with the ink included.

I agree with Bigeddie! These bottles are really nice and can be filled time and time again.

Thank you all. I will continue to read others thoughts. I think that these bottles are addicting to an extent.

Worth noting that the new Alfred Hitchcock (credit to other members!) bottles are the same as the Ink of (XXXX), of which I cant seem to find any left. I plan on stocking up with a couple extra if the ink is as good a writing quality as the Ink of Joy.

  • 2 years later...

I know this is an old post and Bigeddie may not be around anymore ... I'm hoping someone else might be able to answer my question ...

Where do you find the Montblanc ink in the square bottle, like the one pictured above in post #8?

And does it have "something" inside that helps you refill when the volume is low?

My MB ink bottles are the "shoe" shaped bottles.

I stumbled upon this old post while searching for TWSBI ink bottles. I saw the TWSBI ink bottle video on the Goulet website and it has this plastic insert thingamabob that helps you refill the last bit of ink when it is running low. I'm thinking of getting one of the TWSBI bottles and wanted to see if anyone had any comments about the metal vs plastic lid.

The small square bottles may still be available at the MB Boutiques. I don't know if they were limited colors. I have the Blue Diamond and also an orange (Ink of Joy?) in that style bottle.

The square bottles come with certain limited edition inks. You can get it right now with Leonardo Red Chalk or Einstein Grey. Both are still available at MB stores.

I have the metal TWSBI bottles and I love it particularly when I'm using it with a converter and don't have to get ink all over myself. It doesn't just work with a TWSBI, it works with any standard converter as well. It's great! The plastic one works just fine but I like the looks of the metal a little better BUT if you use the metal one on the travel bottle with the VAC it makes it very top heavy and hard to deal with so the plastic works a little better. I decided to go with the metal and my friend went with the plastic. We're both happy with our decision.

Another really great inkwell bottle is Levenger and they have more colors. They also have the little plastic thing inside to make it easy to get the last drop.

To sit on your desk and look pretty you can't beat the MB 30ml bottles. They are as cute as can be and the ink is good as well.

Thank you for that tip about the metal vs plastic lid. I like the look of the TWSBI bottle and will get one even though I don't have a TWSBI pen to take advantage of that special TWSBI pen filling thingamabob that is included. I went to check out the little travel bottle you mentioned and it looks like it would be useful for carrying around extra ink (like how you might carry extra ink cartridges) while out and about and it appears to be slightly larger than those plastic sample vials. I watched the video on how to fill your pen from the little travel bottle. That's really cool! Makes me want to pick up one of their VAC pens.

NIce to know the Levenger ink bottles also have the insert. I don't recall seeing any comments about their inks while reading old posts, I wonder whether they have good inks. Those bottles are less expensive and there's ink included. Sounds like a great deal! ... on the other hand, buying EMPTY inkwell bottles is probably the best way to go. I still haven't used up enough ink to empty a bottle. Maybe all my bottles are bottomless.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
