I've taken my first step into the world of flex pens and am anxious to get the most out of my nib. What are some of your favourite inks to use in your flex pens?

I do not have much experience with flex nibs, or the inks. However, I do know of Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses and Black Swan in English Roses, both of these inks were made to have amazing qualities with flex nibs. I know numerous people that bought both of these inks to use in the Noodler's flex pens, and the inks are absolutely stunning.

There are numerous ink reviews in the review section, I highly recommend that you check them out.

Due to the copious flow most flex pens have, I tend to favor iron gall inks, since they are on the dry side, dry quickly, and have beautiful shading. Other than that...any ink looks markedly improved coming out of flex.

Both of the Noodler's Black Swans and the new Blue Nose Bear are good for flexies... I also love Noodler's Apache Sunset. Pretty much anything that shades well would be a good candidate for a flex pen. Or drier inks, as WillSW said, since they do put out so much ink when you flex.

Vert Empire is great. PR Arabian Rose, BSIAR... I'm trying Bouquet d'Antan in my Symphony next.

As noted by others, black swan in Australian roses is a must. Just ordered another bottle.

Diamine Jade,

Noodler's Green Marine is OK.

Diamine Turquoise,

Noodler's Habanero - dependent on the flow of the pen.

I've only recently started to get serious about flex, but so far I have been impressed with R&K Verdigris and Alt Goldgrun. Both have controlled flow and lovely colors. Stipula Verde Muschiato is also nice.

Writing regular, not flexing the nibs, in semi-flex and maxi-semi-flex/'flexi'. I don't use my easy full flex or dip pen nibs much.

Pelikan Jade was nothing much in BB, crisp italic M, in the '90 400 M started. Danced very well in Semi-flex M and F.

MB Winter Green, I really like it in in semi-flex F and maxi-semi-flex/'flexi' OF.

I would like to second the Noodler's Apache Sunset, just filled my Noodler's flex with it last night, beautiful shading although a bit drier than the Diamine red/black I was using.

As stated previously any ink that shades well will look even better when used with a flex nib.

Diamine Turquoise is awesome in a flexy nib. I also love Caran d'Ache Storm and Herbin Poussière de Lune. Herbin Vert Empire is a beautifully shading green that flows perfectly (just enough but not too much) in a wet flexible nib. Herbin Lie de Thé is an interesting olive-brown. Actually, most any Herbin ink is great for flex.

I am currently infatuated with Noodler's No. 41 Brown. It must be the new formula as the bottle says,"2012." Lovely range of brown shades, not too wet and gushy or too dry and scratchy works just right in two different flex nib pens from different manufacturers. Happy experimenting.

I have to second the suggestion for Iron Gall inks, they are lovely performers in flexible nibs!

Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses, Golden Brown, and Sailor Jentle Grenade (AMAZING!) are a few non Iron Galls I think are great used with a flexible nib.

Edit: I just got a bottle, but I have noticed the performance of Noodler's Kung Te-Cheng is great, although I wouldn't expect much shading from it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
