Twsbi Update 2011/08/05

The Micarta prototype looks fascinating.

What made you turn to that material?

I had the impression that it could be difficult to work with, but maybe not . . . .

Incidentally, the 2010 Bexley Owners Club pen was made from G10 fiberglass, which is very similar (if not the same) material as Micarta®.

I ask for a clip because I try to avoid putting pens in the pockets because they could scratch with keys or coins, but considering the rought finish of the Micarta maybe that would not be a problem.

Also a clip, kaweco style, slip on could be a solution for the clip user world.

Thanks kindly for the update. I've been checking your ebay store every day just in case...

I am so excited for the 540 regular and that special version above, very pretty. :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01:

Good thing I have a birthday this month, I can make people buy me TWSBIs as presents!

Rough surface aside, micarta and G10 are both commonly used by Spyderco in their knife handles... I'm quite sure its durable enough =)

I like the Micarta! It kind of reminds me of rolling red clay onto canvas to give it a texture.

The Micarta is not floating my boat, but that means there's another one available for someone else. Isn't it great that we don't all like the same thing? That would be soooo boring (and leave us with little to talk about).

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

Is there any word of the 550? I seem to recall there being plans to make a 530/540-like pen but with more aluminium.

Hey Speedy

Haven't heard about the ink bottle project, will it have a secondary filling well like the Akkerman bottles?

Any prognostication regarding the 700 release?

Thanks, Ted

The best description I could give for the TWSBI bottle would be that it looks kind of like the child of the marriage of a Waterman and Levenger bottle. I seem to recall it will have a Levenger-like well plus an insert that will allow for filling directly into a TWSBI.

ETA: I am definitely anticipating being one of the first 100 to have a broad nibbed 540. :)

Thanks for update and I will start breathing now :)

I am really digging the Micarta - I wonder why the material is not popular with other custom pen makers or am I just ignorant?

I have one of the very first 300 Twsbis 530 and would love to get one of the first Micartas.

Now what we really need is a mechanical pencil that matches the 530-540 style of pens.... demonstrator look with similar lines....

I generally carry a matching pencil with my 51s and Vacumatics...

I will purchase one of those 10 micarta rough-ups that you have right now Speedy!! Seriously...

You'd better make a ton of those micarta pens. They are going to sell like hotcakes.

I love the micarta but Speedy please please please consider a clip as an option.

clip, yes, after I had the pen with me a few days, I already decided to make two versions, without clip and without clip

with clip is very convenience for carrying, but without clip do feel very classic and calm

Are you thinking that the Micarta will be produced in a range of colors?

Either way, you can sign me up now for one.

the first one should be same color as shown above.

we need to find another pattern of raw material to make different color pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
