Kaweco Converter (Universal Cartridge)

Recommended Posts

I bought a mini converter for a Kaweco Sport, but it doesn't fit it.

I know a there are some threads around here abut Kaweco converters and how some converters work and some don't. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before, but I thought I would share it just in case nobody has.

Monday, I was examining my converter against the Kaweco cartridge that came with the pen, and I realized that the small part that connects to the pen is too long compared to the Kaweco converter, so I decided to experiment with a free Universal cartridge that I had, since it was free and it was the same length as the mini cartridge which didn't fit. I cut the tip of the free cartridge with an exacto knife to match the Kaweco cartridge, and I was able to fit the Universal cartridge to my Kaweco pen, it didn't go in too tight so I was worried about leaking. I've been using the modified cartridge since Monday and have not had any leaks, the pen writes great too.

I haven't modified the mini converter yet as I'm waiting to get a couple more to have in case the exacto knife slips, but I think it will work like the Universal cartridge did. It is a little tricky to cut straight so don't want to chance it until I have more.

Attaching a picture to this.

I was excited about my findings on this, but there are other answers, so the findings were superflous. Some of those universal international standard cartridges do fit right out of the box, which means some of the mini converters will too. I ordered a couple of mini converters to see if they are the right size or a tad longer. I will just have to compare them to the Kaweco brand converter and modify them if needed.

by shortening a standard converter you can make a converter that fits into a Kaweco Sport - but only the injection moulded (or is it cast?) plastic models Classic Sport and Ice Sport. The other models' internal barrel length is shorter.

I don't think the OP's problem related to length. Rather, it was in the nipple size. Maybe it's a branded (bespoke) converter for another brand of pen? If length is the problem, I have read here that some KaWeCo pens have weights stuck inside the barel. Removing these may help.

Edited to add:

Personally I have no problem using mine with an old cartridge and a syringe

Yes the original problem was that my mini converter had the nipple too long to couple with the Kaweco. I didn't want to cut into it because it was expensive and if I slipped with the exacto knife and damaged it, I would be wasting the the money I spent on it, so I experimented on a cartridge.

I found some mini converters a lot cheaper on ebay. I ordered them and now I'm waiting for them to arrive to see if it fits the Kaweco. If they don't fit, I know what to do to make it fit now. The original post was about testing the theory on a free cartridge I had that had the same nipple length as my original mini converter which didn't fit and how by cutting it to match the Kaweco cartridge it worked.

I've ecountered universal international standard cartridges and converters with slight variations in the nipple length, which to my findings was enough to make it not click on the Kaweco. depending on manufacturer.

I was hoping my original posting would help others to know that cutting the tip a little will make a non-fitting international standard cartridge fit. I thought about maybe I should have done a before and after picture to explain this better, it was my first time trying to post about explaining something and I didn't do a good job, plus like I said before it wasn't that exciting of a discovery, only for me. I wasn't asking for help, hehe!

Thanks!

I am very interested in your experience with the mini-converters. I have been toying with turning my sport into an eyedropper filler, but I am willing to try an inexpensive mini-converter if it is a sound and leak-proof alternative. I will keep checking back for the results of the experiment.

Thanks,

Ed

I have 3 mini converters now. I found out they work ok for my blue ice sport, they click in with no fail. In the orange one they don't fit, but I found some orange cartridges that I really like, a nice bright orange and they fit the pen perfectly so I can write in orange ink with my orange pen. I bought the cartridges on ebay, second try on those, as I ordered 70 first but the ink color was disappointing, the second order from a different vendor and different appearance was a great color. I think I'm good now that I can get orange ink in my orange pen.

As soon as I can afford it, I will order another Kaweco, thinking a red one or a green one, I'm trying to get all the colors of the Ice Sports. Hopefully the converter will fit that one. Thanks all!

I got a Monteverde Mini converter to use with my Kaweco Sport but the plunger is a terrible idea because it can't be completely filled. Also, it didn't fit--the nipple inserted was too long. So I cut it (about 50% off) and now it snaps in but it's quite loose; I can use it to clean but not for ink.

I may buy this converter soon, but it looks like the same nipple length as the Monteverde Mini. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230629350086

  • 2 years later...

I bought a mini converter for a Kaweco Sport, but it doesn't fit it.

I am just washing and refilling a Kaweco cartridge.

Bah! Same here. I have tried every possible converter, monteverde, international, nothing fits. Just that one original kaweco cartridge.

The way I see it (bumping thread 3 years old!):

Keep refilling one that works

Or

Turn pen into eye-dropper.

Cult pens have some new kaweco sport converter in stock, so that might be an option too.

But it did frustrate me a little - going on the trip, not being able to take mini pen bc their own adapter wouldn't work :(

I tried to use a Monteverde mini converter (ie: designed to fit into anything that would take a standard international converter), tried to put it in my Kaweco AL Sport.

Only two problems though.

It won't connect to the nipple, the diameter of the opening is too broad to get a grip onto the nipple so it would just fall right off (seems to do the same thing on my only other german pen a Faber-Castell Basic, which I already have a converter designed specifically for it, but was just testing).

However even if I could get it to go on snuggly to the nipple, the other issue is that the convert design itself is too long.

For example if I were to fill it up, and pull the plunger all the way back for maximum fill, once I screwed the barrel back on, the plunger would be pushed up to the point that it only leaves about 20% or so room for ink.

fpn_1408570854__miniconvert_kaweco.jpg

If the nipple would fit, my solution would have been to cut the back of the plunger at that depth (ie: only that much sticking out fully filled), and thread a hole thru the end of the plastic rod so that I could just hook it to pull it back all the way when filling, or push it using the same hooking mechanism. But because the nipple doesn't fit, I have not attempted to do that.

For now I'm syringe filling a cartridge.

Cult Pens in the UK has an Aerometric Metal with Rubber Sac Converter for Kaweco Sport. I got mine 2-3 mos ago when I bought a Kaweco Sport Stonewashed pen. Don't think it's available in USA yet. Cults usual speedy service, great selection and low prices are very attractive. Showed up in New Mexico in about 7 Calendar days, IIRC. Cult is the Jet Pens of UK, IMHO, all said in a highly positive good way. Usual disclaimers, no affiliation, just a very satisfied customer. Jim

Pensible There's a fellow in Prior Lake who sells Kaweco Sports on ebay, at least he did a couple of years back. I bought several, great service, NIB pens and great Prices. He's just down the road from you.

I prefer refilling cartridges to using converters a lot of the time. A syringe and a quick squirt into the cartridge is fast and efficient. It's easy to clean the syringe and the cartridge and I find that there is much less issue with ink clinging to the sides of the cartridge than some converters. I probably have a dozen pens that I only use refilled cartridges with and I think I have only thrown 2 away in the last 3 years.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
