There was lightning the afternoon I tried, but it was sporadic. I'll try again some time.

Sonia, I do love those pics!

Thanks Cristi! With patience and "the perfect storm" you will get nice pics!

Totally random, but my new macro lens ( :cloud9: ) came by mail today and I didn't get home until late at night. So, I shot what I had at hand.

Thanks, but if it's a good shot it's also unlikely I took it. In this case it was my sister, but someone in the family had to get the talent.

Traveling for work as much as I do, I sometimes do not avail myself of the photographic opportunities around me. Indeed, I arrived after a long drive to west Texas for the week's work last evening just before the annular solar eclipse was beginning, and so I couldn't poise myself ideally for shooting. In addition, my location was on the easternmost part of the "zone" where this would be visible, so the time was scant.

Still, there's always the opportunity for photography, if one but seizes the moment, and I was intent on not taking the usual sort of eclipse shot where only the outline of the sun is visible against a black backdrop. Chance favours the prepared mind, it is said, so with the addition of a Singh-Ray Vari-ND on the lens, a tripod quickly erected to be placed, then a little rapid thought of composing the shot in the scene in front of me, I was able to capture an image.

The more complete annular moment came as the sun started to fall beneath the foliage and terrain, but in truth, I prefer the moment that I captured.

Always shoot.

Hi all, this probably doesn't really fit in thie thread but I thought you'd like to see. Here is a link to a photo-series of the eclipse in a dutch newspaper.

http://www.nrc.nl/inbeeld/2012/05/21/in-beeld-de-zon-aarde-en-daar-tussenin-plotseling-de-maan/

Pic 4 is amazing, though someone questions if it hasn't been photoshopped. I like it because the people in it seem to have their attention somewhere else. They're not obviously staring at the eclipse that's happening almost unseen. To me this makes it only the more beautiful and impressive. These beautiful things are all around and they don't bother if we do or don't see them. That's up to us and they'll just continue being there and happening.

This is what I like about John P.s picture too. This is the eclipse in the wild so to speak. No-one around, just some trees and electricity posts. Thanks for the picture and I hope the link works.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you may just find you get what you need

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
