Inks With A "sheen"

shaylenwilliams

Recommended Posts

I haven't read the entire thread, mostly cos I wasn't particularly interested in ink sheen and didn't use inks with sheen that I noticed - until recently.

Platinum Carbon Black

Sailor Sei Boku

Waterman Bleu Mystere

Levenger Raven Black

I never noticed sheen with Noodler's Black until I converted a Ranga Soquel to an eyedropper and started pressing down on its vintage Wahl semi-flex nib, but it is a very subtle sheen.

Good one. O.P., Is that the color of the paper? (reddish brown)

I got some sheen to show on Private reserve Ebony Purple. It really shows best when it is about half dry. really has a nice banknote green sheen to it

Okay, wait, I've tried some of those inks. Heck, I've used some heavily and I'VE NEVER SEEN THAT KIND OF SHEEN from my stuff. So, besides the ink, what makes the difference?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

No pics, alas (no good camera), but I've found Caran d'Ache Vibrant Green to create lots of beautiful red sheen when used in a wet writer (broad Levenger True Writer) on Tomoe River paper.

Paper(!), pen and planetary conjunctions...

And I've also noticed, that for some reasons it becomes a bit more apparent when the ink level is low.

Someone was enthusing wildly about the sheen on PR Velvet Black. It was supposed to be spectacular.

Someone else said that they got a sheen if they went through a bunch of archaic stuff to see it (special lights/lenses/paper/etc). If you have to have just-so circumstances then...is it worth it? Maybe. Maybe not.

I'd say the most important is the paper. If it is less absorbent it helps a lot.
You might(!) need some special lightning and a good lens to capture it and show it off (and maybe a bit post processing), but it doesn't mean its not visible to the naked eye. You just need to find the right angle.
Some say Diamine China Blue has a sheen, but I barely notice that.

I've captured this earlier. Parker Penman Sapphire. Absolutely no post processing, special lighting or anything. Right out of the camera - apart from resizing of course-.

Velvet Black is pretty nice when it comes to sheen, but I prefer Waterman Black's sheen, which look 95% similar (though the underlying inks are much more different). Waterman Black is better behaved, certainly (and indeed, my favorite black ink along with Noodler's Dark Matter).

I left the samples out overnight, but Velvet Black was the only that did not dry.

Alas, I cannot coax the sheen out of Waterman yet. It is a charming ink, and I can't even describe why. Maybe it's just not thick and aggressive. But the sheen? MIA with me.

Okay, so that Velvet Black looks purple. So the lighting and the paper and some patience are required. I don't see this in my immediate future.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
