It's kind of an interesting behavior of sheen-heavy inks. When the ink gets low the amount of sheen goes up. I've noticed this with flex and rigid nibs. Here's the same ink and pen after being refilled:

Waterman Purple in a fine nib. It produces much more sheen in wetter pens.

Waterman Mysterious Blue has SHEEN? Who knew? Oh now I *really* need a bottle of that! :drool:

And here I was just thinking it was a pretty and well-behaved "safe" ink coming out of my blue Vacumatic (although I don't think I was getting the sheen out of the Vac, since it has an F or E nib on it...).

When I wrote with the Purple across various inks, the purple would change to green. It's quite cool.

This thread has turned me into a sheen junkie. I don't even like my regular shading inks anymore...and most of my collection are inks with sheen-y qualities. It seems like Iroshizuku and Sailor inks are particularly strong in this field. ;)

~hard to tell, but in the right lightning the concentrated parts look silvery

Nagasawa Kobe #32: Tamon Purple Gray

~this is a dark, cool purple that has gold sheen, much in the same vein as MB Violet

Some of the usual suspects again: Sailor Jentle Grenade (I love-love-LOVE this color), Iroshizuku Yama-budo (another great golden sheener!), and Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo (blue with magnificent red tones).

Kaigan Stone Gray is supposed to have this orangey-yellow-silvery sheen according to saskia_madding's review, but it wasn't obvious enough in this writing sample. I'll try again next time...

Great post! Those Kobe inks are a surprise to me... I wish it were easier to decipher which is which (region needs to be Japan for that search).

After lusting after it for a long time, I was disappointed by Sailor Grenade. My sample bottle doesn't shade fer spit, jes a dull uniform purple. I've tried it in most everything. PPPs, dip pens, even the same Lamy w/ 1.5mm nib as Rants of the Archer. Several papers including Rhodia, C-F, Tomoe River, etc. No joy. OTOH, it sheens like crazy.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
