Please take a moment to adjust your gear to accurately depict the Gray Scale below.

As the patches are neutral gray, that is what should be seen.

Figure 1. Drawn Lines

Rather than the ubiquitous swabs, each ink is depicted by showing down-strokes, from the Sailor + MS nib on HPJ1124, re-oriented to the horizontal.

  1. From the Estie on HPJ1124: SJSH.
  2. From the Estie on HPJ1124: Pk-p.
  3. From the 330 on Rhodia: SJSH.
  4. From the 330 on Rhodia: Pk-p.
  5. From the 1911 on Rhodia: SJSH.
  6. From the 1911 on Rhodia: Pk-p.

Observations:

  • These aspects are not apparent from the images.
  • These observations may differ ever so slightly from the Ink Review/s which may be in place.
  • My contribution was to generate a few reasonable samples, then capture the appearance of those samples.
  • If you'd like more detailed information, please send me a PM; I'll do what I can. (Within reason - you naughty FPN boys.)
  • I leave it to each viewer to interpret what is seen, and/or to initiate discussion in the usual way.

Type:

  • Both are dye-based FP inks.

Flow Rate:

  • SJSH is a bit high, (wet).
  • Pk-p is a bit greater than normal, (succulent).

Nib Dry-out:

  • Both inks are OK.

Start-up:

  • Both inks are OK.

Lubrication:

  • SJSH is very high and can be too slick.
  • Pk-p is high and sure-footed.

Nib Creeping:

  • None for both inks.

Staining:

  • Not seen for both inks.

Clogging:

  • Not seen for both inks.

Bleed Through:

  • SJSH from the 1911 on the HPJ1124.

Clean-up:

  • Both cleaned-up quickly and thoroughly with plain water.

FINE PRINT

The accuracy and relevance of this Comparison depends in great part upon consistency and reliability of materiel used.

Ink does not require labelling/notice to indicate (changes in) formulation, non-hazardous ingredients, batch ID, date of manufacture, etc.

As always, YMMV, not only from materials, methods, environment, etc., but also due to differences between the stuff in the bottles I used, and that in bottle/s you may have.

Also, I entrust readers to separate opinion from fact; to evaluate inferences and conclusions as to their merit; and to be amused by whatever tickles your fancy.

EDIT - To add:

Please note that the SJSH Written Samples for this comparison have the narrow nibs represented by an Estie J with a 9556 Fine nib, whereas the Ink Review has the narrow nibs represented by a Pelikan M200 with an EF nib.

I'm going to start with the Kon-Peki, since there are so many more people who are loving it (me included, having used up my sample....)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
