Pilot Custom 74's Soft Nibs

Most of you guys probably know that the custom 74 comes in 15 different nibs but it's hard to find information on some of the rarer nib options. So i was hoping that custom 74 owners can chip in on this thread and comment on the nibs on their 74s.

Initially i was planning to get a Soft Medium nib, but now i'm interested in trying the wavily nib instead. The description says that it's a soft medium nib turned upwards but the writing shows that it's thinner than a medium nib. Also, the wavily nib sounds similar to the waverley nibs that richard binder has so it might be interesting to try it out.

Dear Xuan, the WA/SU/FA/PO nibs are not offered with the size 5 Custom 74. The only special nib offered is the MS. I have the WA on a 742 and it is a nice smooth firm nib(not a nail), I also have a 742 with SM nib and in my opinion the size 10 SM nib is simply awesome. it shades like a brush, in fact i prefer it over my FA. It is a superb nib for those who have a light touch. The only problem with my SM is that it needs only Pilot inks, with other inks it tends to skip sometimes. This is a mystery to me.

Hari, in your opinion, which nib has more spring to it, the WA or the SM?

I have realised that all their nibs in this range are very firm. Nice in a way, but sometimes seems springy too.

Certainly, the SM nib is springier, IME.

From my experience. The No. 5 soft nib is fairly springy and can give some line variations if you use the F-M nib or broader nibs. Also, I noticed that the Pilot No. 5 medium nib writes like an European medium nib.

If you are keen on having a broader but interesting nib. The music nib is available in the No. 5 size and you can buy it installed on a 74.

I use a Soft F-M nib and has no issues with using Sailor Seiboku Blue Black ink, J Herbin inks and Aurora inks. In fact, I would classify the nibs are wet.

Whatever nib you choose, the Pilot No. 5 nib is buttery smooth.

I was hoping that the Heritage 92 Demo would come in different nibs,

but as usual there is nothing except the F,MF,M,B so does anyone have

an idea how to get a replacement nib and the cost of such a No.5?

Thanks for this account of the WA and SM.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
