From the Quiver Global website:

We are proud to present Quiver, thoughtfully crafted leather pen holders for your Moleskine or similarly-sized notebooks.

We are passionate about using our notebooks for journaling, sketching, writing, composing, cartooning and note-taking. We became frustrated searching for and waiting for someone to deliver a product to pair our preferred pens with our treasured notebooks. So we took on the task ourselves.

We are confident that you will love what we came up with, and that you will wonder how you ever got by without a Quiver leather pen holder

I was really excited about this product when I first saw it over at Biffybeans blog,
, a few weeks ago. Stephanie did an awesome review of the two pen holder. Since I have a two pen holder, albeit not nearly as nice as these, when I contacted Bob Koch about the possibility of my reviewing the product and he said yes, I asked if I could review the single pen holder.

This is a large holder and the website indicates that it will fit:

Fits Large Notebooks
- A5 size

The elastic band allows a Quiver to fit notebooks 8" - 10.25" tall. (20.3cm - 26cm)

Fits Hard Cover Notebook Brands

Moleskine

ecosystems

Rhodia

Quo Vadis

Piccadilly

So first on the
. The Habana measures 9-5/8" tall. As you can see it fits this notebook.

However, I could not get it even on each end. One end wrapped around the cover, while the other was flush with the edge of the elastic.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dcGUM5wwl2A/TQ5IviZ83HI/AAAAAAAACAY/kq8yBzySL5I/s320/IMG_1419.JPG

I also found that the Quiver does not lay flat when a pen is in it. I will say, however, that these really were minor issues and did not bother me in the use of the holder.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dcGUM5wwl2A/TQ5Iw17PIRI/AAAAAAAACAc/h0gOT3rqhz0/s320/IMG_3373.JPG

I noted on the website that one person commented that the way this Quiver attaches prevents a access to the back pocket. I did not find this to be an issue. Since the Quiver is attached with elastic, I found that I could still access the back pocket with no problem.

The second test notebook was my
. This journal measures 9-7/8" and again, although the Quiver fits, you can see that the leather wraps around the cover at the top and the elastic is flush on the bottom.

The Quiver gaps quite substantially on this journal.

Lastly on the Rhodia Webnotebook.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dcGUM5wwl2A/TQ5JDJzXIRI/AAAAAAAACBQ/4Tdg8fpOUqs/s320/IMG_3439.JPG

The Webnotebook measures 8-3/8" and, of these three, provides the best fit for the Quiver.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dcGUM5wwl2A/TQ5I6ojSnyI/AAAAAAAACA0/iJqHin96lp4/s320/IMG_3405.JPG

There is little or no bunching when a pen is in residence.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dcGUM5wwl2A/TQ5I8D_6YiI/AAAAAAAACA4/RG0WAKBOYA4/s320/IMG_3409.JPG

And there is little of no gap between the Quiver and the front cover.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dcGUM5wwl2A/TQ5I9X_Z8bI/AAAAAAAACA8/xmg8U3iCCpo/s320/IMG_3410.JPG

The journal will not completely close on it's own, with the Quiver installed, but that's what the elastic on the journal is for.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dcGUM5wwl2A/TQ5I-TxjjYI/AAAAAAAACBA/NHLX20myxx4/s320/IMG_3432.JPG

It also will not lay completely flat when opened. However, I did not find this to be an issue. I drew in this journal for several hours with the Quiver in place, both on my knee and on my desk and did not find that the Quiver in any way hindered the use of the journal.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dcGUM5wwl2A/TQ5I_Yp0uRI/AAAAAAAACBE/WICcEQVr4bo/s320/IMG_3434.JPG

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dcGUM5wwl2A/TQ5JAM8w_rI/AAAAAAAACBI/gvj9yEyNq3I/s320/IMG_3435.JPG

So my final conclusion is that I really like this one pen Quiver. The only concern I have would be moving this from the larger Habana or Ecosystem to the Webbie after extended use. I wonder how the elastic will hold up.

Hi, all! After emailing with Bob Koch, I wen home and played with centering the Quiver on the Habana and Eureka!! it worked. It's not as easy as with the Webbie but as you can see it fits much better. I'm using this Habana as a journal currently so I'll try to follow up on my concern about the elastic after extended use on the larger journal.

I am always amazed at the creativity of others!

Looks like a good idea; but seems like a lot of leather (and fuss) to hold a single pen...

I have the large double pen holder and a moleskine passions "Book Journal" for one of my wife's Christmas presents and it is a nice pen holder. I am using the Webbies now for my journal so I will be picking one up for myself soon as well!

Has anyone used the smaller sized single pen holder? I carry the small pocket notebook with me everyday for to do lists, notes on the fly, etc, but I never have a way to carry a pen with it so I was looking at the small single pen case.

The double pen holder I ordered (fits on the front, not on the spine) arrived in time to show it at Pen Posse. My current notebook is a smaller version of what I usually scribble in, so I'm not using the pen holder, and I want to figure out how to put a separator inside so the Pelikan M215 won't rub against the Pelikan Toledo (and vice versa), but I'm very excited about this sort of pen holder... and Fred has made his own pen holder that he showed me at Pen Posse... so... I'm very excited about that, too!

The website says that they use chrome tanning - some other posts on FPN indicate that this can damage some FPs, depending on whether all of the "stuff" (I'm old with goldfish brain OK) is properly removed in manufacture.

I agree - think it looks great for two pens, of a pen and pencil, I think this Single pen holder is a simpler solution that would have no problems with fitting any hard cover journal (just a loop that sticks to the back cover).

The ones that go down the spine just look over-engineered to me but I like the look of the two pen holders that sit on the front.

I really like the single pen holder that fits over the spine. The reasoning behind it was so that you could stack several notebooks with out the pen holder getting in the way. The Lechtturm holder looks ok, but it is a single use holder and does not transfer to other journals.

We corresponded with Bob Koch about adding a separator in the two pen holder and he is taking that idea to their product development meeting in early 2011. They are very responsive to ideas and suggestions.

Yes, the single-use pen loop also doesn't provide the kind of protection I desire for my Nakayas and Pelikans.

The separator! I need that.

OK I withdraw what I said about the design.

Used the Leuchxxx (can't be bothered looking up the spelling I'm so cross) that I linked to earlier. When easing my pen in, the elastic came away from the mount. I'm just pleased I tested this BEFORE sticking it into the notebook!

So perhaps this solution isn't over-engineered after all :)

Now if we can just convince the quiver manufacturers to use vegetable tanned leather I'm in!

+1 on vegetable tanned.

I have two of the single pen holders and two of the double pen holders. I actally attached the single pen holder to my DayPlanner and due to the extra width in the spine, I am able to fit a fountain pen, a ball point (in case someone asks to borrow a pen) And a pencil! I love these Quivers! (no affliation...wish there was ... I've already spent a grip!!)

Ownership update: My pocket sized dual pen Quiver is about a year old. It holds two fountain pens from my collection of Sheaffers and I rotate them weekly. The Quiver has seen typical daily use–in and out of my shoulder bag, on and off my bike, in and out for meetings and musings–and it definitely shows the results: patina, knicks and scratches and dents, softening of the leather. It's absolutely delightful. The stitching and elestic panel have held up well and I expect to get several more years of utility.

One small quibble and a warning about a potential flaw: The top edge of the front flap sees all of the wear and tear of clipping in my pens. It has softened so much that it distorts when replacing a pen so I must move the pen slowly and carefully or actually hold the clip open with my thumbnail. I anticipated this in a post I made to some notebook blog when my Quiver originally arrived. It's not a big deal, the action has become automatic, but it will only get worse as the Quiver continues to age. You can see the Sheaffer spring-loaded clip discussed in other threads. It's got some power.

You also need to know the side stitching that holds the top flap to the back piece is where all of the stress occurs as you use your pens and move the Quiver from book to book. The makers (Saddleback Leather) have thoughfully reverse-stitched here but I think the top edge and the sides need a wee bit more attention.

My bottom line: Terrific little product. I am sure you would be happy with one and every notebook addict you know wants one as a gift.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

David,

This company is extremely responsive to input. You should contact them and let them know your experience and concerns. I did another review on the double pen holder, which I love and use all the time, and at that time told them that some of the stitching had come loose on the single holder, they told me to return it immediately for replacement. I received a subsequent email from the person in charge of qualify control and he thanked me and advised me that they had discovered this issue and had resolved it - something to do with the bobbin in their machines.

Excellent update, much appreciated. I would have thought page bump to be an issue, is this not the case? Thanks.

By page bump I presume you mean a possible problem on the left side of the notebook caused by the thick elastic band? I suppose that might be an issue for lefties or for those of us who want to use every availlable square centimeter of paper. Since I'm using fountain pens exclusively, I use only the right hand side of each leaf. For that reason, the thickness of the device itself on the outside cover is not really a problem for me, either.

I should have included this information; I don't think about this any longer. I try to buy my pocket notebooks in bulk and, with so many different colors and paper styles on the shelf, I just write furiously till I fill up each of my notebooks. Side benefit: what I think of as valuable life experiences and information are easier to find if it's less dense.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

That answers it. Thank you. Sometimes, I write only on the right side, and then at the end I flip it around and write on the other side. And, sometimes I will turn it to landscape/horizontal from portrait/vertical for similar reasons to your density perspective.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
