Lamy calligraphy nibs

Recommended Posts

I am just starting to get into calligraphy, and have a set of Sheaffer pens + 3 nibs (fine, medium, broad), but I was wondering if anyone had ever tried the Lamy stock calligraphy nibs. They come in 1.1, 1.5, and 1.9. I'm assuming the larger the number, the wider the nib? Like I said, I'm just a beginner.

Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about these? I was also considering the Pelikan nibs, but each one runs about $40, and each Lamy nib runs $11.

Thanks!

Good :D

Start with a 1.1 mm, it is good for general writing, too. You can put these nibs on any Steel nibbed Lamy you like, and won't be disappointed.

Here in Germany the single nib (without section or feed) costs only € 4.30, soo feel a little bit ripped off, over there :P

If you have the Sheaffer set already, and you like it, the Lamy might be redundant. (Unless the Lamys and Sheaffers have very different nib sizes - I forget.)

Lamy italic nibs make an excellent alternative choice to a regular F, M etc for more characterful writing. I have a 1.1mm on one of my own pens. They fit all Lamy models that come with a steel nib (eg Vista, Al-Star, Studio, Accent etc) and we can supply any size nib on any compatible pen.

The number (1.1, 1.5, 1.9 --- since they're european they may use a comma as a decimal separator, so 1,1; 1,5; 1,9 instead) is the width of the nib in millimeters.

I've just gotten an Al Star w/ a 1.1mm nib, which I really like (though it's huge! well, really big compared to my Platignum and Esterbrooks), but I'm finding the thick/thin contrast isn't as high as I get w/ the Platignum calligraphy nibs (I've got both the lettering and the italic sets). I suppose I should get a full set of Sheaffer and Speedball Panache and Rotring and Parker Vector sets to do a comprehensive comparison).

I have three Safaris, all with stock stub nibs - the 1.1, 1.5. and the 1.9 - I love them! I don't have much in the way of other stub or italic nibs to compare them to - heck, none, infact, but I find them very nice to write with, and lately, the 1.1 on a yellow Safari, with Noodlers Golden Brown ink has been my daily writer in my Moleskine with no real issues at all. I find the nibs to be quite smooth, given my lack of comparison nibs. :D

I didn't realize that you can switch out the nibs so easily. What are the steps and tools involved for doing that? Are there any risks?

The risks are breaking the feed or bending the nib, but I don't know how often that might happen.

To remove: Stick a large piece of sticky tape crosswise on the large shiny top surface of the nib. The ends of the tape give you a "handle" to hang on to. Using that temporary handle, pull the nib in a nice straight line lengthwise, away from the pen. Try to pull smoothly without jerking. Remove the tape immediately when finished.

To replace: No tape is necessary. Just put the nib on nice and straight, without bending anything. Make sure it goes on all the way and does not become crooked.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
