Music Nibs

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I am thinking of getting a music nib on the next pen I buy but I have never used one and dont know if it would be suitable for a lefty (underwriter who angles the paper at approx 80 degrees.

Would I be better off to get a lefty italic nib or a stub?

Would really appreciate your views.

Thanks ;)

A music nib is a kind of stub. Whether it's good or bad for you, depends which music nib you're talking about. Have you used any italic or other stub nibs before?

Hi David

I have used italic nibs before and get on ok with them. I have used both left handed ones and standard ones which are cut straight and not on a slant.

I was thinking of getting a Platinum pen with music nib.

Thanks

Dawn

Just today (or was it yesterday?) there was a thread here where someone else was considering a music nib. It would be good if you read that one - it had useful information on music nibs, what they are, and how they work. But if you like a straight-cut italic nib, a straight-cut music nib would of course work for you as well.

Music nibs are designed to put down a lot of ink. That indicates a tendency to smear so if your lefty handwriting drags over the wet ink it will be even worse than a drier writer. If you don't smear, it should work fine for you.

I find Platinum music nib tend to be wetter than sailor's. Try both of them if you have the chance. Both are within the same price range. I prefer Sailor, its more crisp to my liking.

Hi Dawn,

That was me..and being a newbie i stupidly did not put the actual question in the topic title - so the topic is "very newbie question" and it has a blue question mark next to it - posted last 2 days i think.

I'm sure you've probably found it already, but if you hadn't this might spare you the trouble.

Cheers

Hi Dawn,

As you indicate you are a lefty underwriter, who angles a notepad 80 degrees. I am assuming that you angle the notepad to the right :D, and that you therefore don't have a problem with smearing ink. You also indicate that you have no problems with italics either.

A music nib essentially is a very broad italic, be it in some cases with an extra slit to cater for extra ink flow, which may be required because the nib is so wide.

My conclusion from all this is that you shouldn't have too many problems, if any, adjusting to a music nib, provided you can live with the generally more strict requirements regarding holding the pen perpendicular to the writing direction.

This is due to two facts, namely that the nib point is quite wide and thin, resulting a a fairly small sweet spot, and that it often is a rather sharp and not very rounded tip, at least, IME. IOW, it often is more akin a sharp italic than a cursive italic. Hence it is less forgiving to holding it not right. This is partially taken care of by increased ink flow, but certainly not entirely so.

Even so, if you're used to italics, and write well with those, I don't expect you to have any problems handling a music nib.

I made a sample once comparing Sailor 1911M music nib and Platinum #3776 music nib.

I prefer Platinum music nib, it gives more variation lines and is more smooth than Sailor's one. I have a Stub nib too if you want me to write a sample with it to compare with music nibs.

I haven't seen topic carefully but I forgot to tell you I'm a right-hand writer. But if you don't care, I'll put on a comparison between stub and music as soon as I'm back at home

Hi NG-Huy

Thank you so much for taking the time to post the comparisons, I appreciate it. I like your witing, I just wish I could read it  my school girl French doesn't quite stretch to that.

I am confident now that I will be ok with either a music nib or a stub so I just have to choose pen & nib now.

Thanks for your help!

Dawn

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
