A music nib is a form of an italic nib where where the nib's contact point is much wider than it is tall. This allows the making of music notes much easier than with a standard pen nib. Music nibs usually have 2+ slits and ink channels.

Why?

When hand-writing music, it was done quickly and many normal italic nibs were prone to being starved of ink in mid-stroke. So the nib guys came up with the idea of creating two slits in the nib, with their corresponding, multiple ink channels in the feed. So this pen should be able to deliver more ink when needed vs. a standard, one-slit, one-set-of-ink-channels pen.

What effect does using a music nib have on normal handwriting and how does it compare to a stub or cursive italic nib? Does anyone have any scans they can post?

I searched ALL OVER THE FORUM to find this for you :)

Hope it helps:

A beautiful review by Leigh R:

I have a Pilot E with a music nib and a Pilot Custom 74 with a music nib, and they are quite different from each other. The Platinum is different from those two. IMHO better than the Pilot Custom 74, and less sharp at the edges than the Pilot E.

Here's what it looks like compared to other pens:

I'd say it was a light-to-mediumweight pen. I prefer using it posted; then again, I post everything.

The nib is everything people say, and more. It wrote immediately when put to paper. It is ultra-smooth and feels like a natural extension of the pen and your hand.

This is my first celluloid pen, and I didn't really know what to expect. I'm amazed at the depth of color and how rich it feels! It won't make me give up my heavy-metal pens yet, but it is lovely, and has already elicited compliments from friends at work.

And here's how it writes.

I love how I can swoop and swoosh and not get broken lines.  :D

Dov made it really easy for me to obtain the pen, and even included a birthday gift! Great service. (No affiliation, etc.)

Here's a gratuitous shot of the Koi with another Platinum, the starter maki-e with cranes.

:)  :)  :)

Thanks. If only it was just the nib that created such writing, it wouldn't look anything like that if I tried :D

Oh no, I thought as a newbie I would soon be slowing down additions to my pen wish list (just need, really need, to buy 2 or 3 more ... ), but that pen is gorgeous. Now my buying plan stretches into 2007! :o

You're right, the logic there was somewhat skewed! But I was already lurking -- so joining was just a matter of Stepping Out Into the Open.

Can I use the dancing bunny now? I've withstood the urge for my debut posts, but it's becoming clear. Me. Cannot. Resist. Temptation. :bunny1:

Will I ever be able to afford to have it made?

You'll have to get one of Dennis's repair DVDs so you can do it yourself, Herr Doktor. ;)

Hmmm,

So you think that you can better the MT Wet Squad? Interesting but yet ill advised.

Depending on the mission objectives, the Wet Squad are equipped with either the Barrett or AI Super Magnum for long range interdiction, coupled with a Leupold with a 2X doubler and a Premier Reticle. For closer range, the Stalker 5.5mm with a Tasco 8-24X40 with optical rangefinder, lower velocity, and only two shot for the classic double tap ;) The Barrett is a semi-auto and is good against most APC armour @ 1 Klick, the AI is a single shot bolt action and is more accurate at extreme range against wet targets. Although the Stalker is the smallest and lightest, it fires a PTFE coated round and is a fully silenced weapon, useful in Urban areas, against personnel wearing body armour at ranges of around 500M.

The MT Wet Squad only use hand made, match grade ammunition for accuracy :)

Although impressed by your Epees, I regret that as you would never be aware that the Wet Squad were there, their usefulness is questionable.

Frighteningly enough, I actually recognize the weapons being discussed. I must spend to much time with my military friends. <G>

Did I ever tell you about how I grew up in the woods playing paintball before it was paintball? Not to mention stealing all my father's fatigues, filling the cargo pockets with sweet gum balls, and spending days in the woods throwing them at my brothers? We had a blast.

Oh...I don't know if I can better them, but I can guarantee a lot of fun trying. <Evil Grin>

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
