"Rough" Lamy nib...

So I'm new to fountain pens... And I'm new to this forum! Anyways, I had a question. I bought a Lamy Safari with a left handed nib about 3 weeks ago - and the nib doesn't write 'smoothly'. It feels like the nib is dragging, and at some angles you can even feel the nib scratch the paper.

Now the pen I'm comparing my Lamy to is a rotring 600 (old newton I think), which writes very smoothly. Though the rotring has many more miles on it than my Lamy. I'm guessing I just need to break in the pen some more (It has only been through about 5 pages of text).

I am a lefty and you should consider that depending on the way you hold the pen when you write you may not even need a "left handed" nib. My understanding is these only help if you are a left handed underwriter. I have 2 pens with normal nibs and they write great.

Hi,

You could send the nib here for a quick fix up.

Dillon

Stolen: Aurora Optima Demonstrator Red ends Medium nib. Serial number 1216 and Aurora 98 Cartridge/Converter Black bark finish (Archivi Storici) with gold cap. Reward if found. Please contact me if you have seen these pens.

Please send vial orders and other messages to fpninkvials funny-round-mark-thing gmail strange-mark-thing com. My shop is open once again if you need help with your pen.

Will someone with the name of "Jay" who emailed me through the email system provide me an email address? There was no email address provided, so I can't write back.

A scratchy pen won't get much better. Don't expect it to break in. If you bought the pen at a store, you should take it back - they might even have a replacement nib in stock. If that won't work, then either order another nib or get this one fixed.

I took mine to a shop in San Antonio and the guy there looked at it. He adjusted it a bit, and afterwards, it wrote great. So, of course, just like any other guy new to fountain pens would do, I went to Macaroni Grill and wrote ALL OVER the table paper. I got home, and it was horrible.

I took it back a few weeks later and told him it was really scratchy. He looked at it again and adjusted it a bit, then had me to a few figure 8s on a piece of really fine sand paper. After that, it worked great again. He said what might of happened was the nib wore down a bit, and since I was holding it at kind of a weird angle (since it was on a table and not a sheet of paper) it might of worn it down a bit.

Greetings!

Pendemonium in Iowa sells replacement Lamy nibs for $12 and they have an MK nib for the Lamy Safari. MK means medium kugel and kugel means a rounded or ball point. These are very smooth nibs and are not usually available in the U.S.A. I'm not sure how it would work for a lefty, but it might be worth a try.

Lamy Safari nibs are very easy to change since the nib slides off and on the feed.

Another possibility for handling a faulty Lamy nib would be to return the pen to Lamy USA for an exchange. There are no parts charges however there is a $7.50 shipping and handling fee that must accompany the returned pen.

Good luck!

Robert Alan

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
