Need some help removing Pelikan M800 piston mechanism

Hi -

I need to open up the piston filler on my Pelikan M800. I need something that will get into that little slit between the piston cap and the barrel, to unscrew the mechanism from the barrel.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Eric

The M800 piston-filler mechanism requires a 1.2mm thick 7mm spanner wrench. This filler is Left Hand Threaded in that you must turn it left to tighten and right to loosen. If you can not find the appropriate wrench then locate a regular 7mm wrench and carefully grind the blades down until 1.2mm thick. Good luck with the repair.

Does anyone know an on-line source to buy such a wrench? I have a few M800's and such a think could come in handy...

I can feel the frustration of waiting until you manage to find a proper tool.

If you believe you will be careful enough the easiest solution is to use 1 or 2 paper clips.

Let each part of the clip to sit on the flat side of the mechanism. You need to hold tight the clips and roll the barrel slowly and carefully.

I usually use some tape on one side of the clips to keep them together whilst I roll the barrel with my free hand.

If you find my solution interesting I may post a Pic when I get back home from work.

No scratch and it works.

Hey there Eric, you can also email info@rjrcooltools.com at rjrcooltools.com. (no affiliation, just a happy customer) This is the website where I gotten my 7.0mm Open End Wrench with Handle. They don't have it listed on their website now, but when you inquire, they'll post it up so that you can purchase it. The part number is 51-1838. I gotten it for $6.04, and use it on my m1000. It will also work for the m800. I also attached a picture of how the wrench looks like.

You could probably buy a Park Tool 7mm cone wrench, which is very thin, probably around 1mm. Available from Bicycle Repair specialists on the internet.

Park tools are of very high quality.

Do you see two flats ( at 180°) on the piston cartridge between the barrel/filling knob gap when fully opening the filling knob?

IAs far as I know only the M800 and M1000 ared equipped with a brass LH screw-in piston housing.

From an earlier post I've learned that the M620/650 pens are equipped with a plastic screw in housing. ( see link below)

Don't screw the housing in to firm !

The 7mm wrench will slide over the flats of the housing when doing so and future removal will be extremely difficult when this happened.

Personally I would apply a small amount of shellac on the 3 latest thread leads and thighten lightly

Does M620 (say, Polar Lights) need the same size wrench as M800 and M1000?

Thanks for the tip, fountainbel!

There are 2 flats as you describe, but these are plastic. Given that the housing was coming up when I turned the nob past the usual stopping point I am pretty sure that the housing is (left-hand) threaded.

I will try to take some measurements today and see what width I have to work with and what the span of the wrench needs to be, and will report my findings here.

I definitely need some help. I have a TWSBI wrench and I've managed to fit it around the section I need to unscrew to get m800 piston out, but the piston won't budge. I know it unscrews a different direction than the TWSBI, but no matter which way I pull I cannot get it to budge even a little bit.

Is there a secret I'm missing? I'm worried about totally breaking it if I apply more force!

After sliding the wrench fully onto the flats, tighten down the filler knob on the wrench. Hold the wrench using your LH fingers and twist the barrel clockwise using fingers of your right hand. It is better to gently heat up the barrel threads area uniformly using a hot air gun. Unless absolutely necessary, do not disassemble your pen...

This is an old thread, but for those who find it by searching as I did, I thought I'd mention this tool is easily found now on Amazon - search for Moody Tools Metric Open End Wrench Set.

I made myself a wrench from an old cd. It's hard and flexible and does no harm to the brass. Works very good!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
