Does anyone know about the Schrieber pens available on the Swisher site? They look like the ebonite Indian pens available from a variety of sources. However, they do not have a name that sounds Indian.

Schreiber is a pen company started by Mr. Venu K Rao who lives in the USA(I hope he will chip in with more information). They are the company who are distributing the improved Wality Piston fillers.

Best,

Hari

Thanks for the post Hari. Schrieber is indeed based in the US and are distributors for Wality pens with improved pistons. The pistons incorporate a double oring arrangement that performs very well and has been very well received. A threaded nib insert is currently being tested and should be available early next year with the Wality eye droppers and piston fillers. Please feel free to contact me directly for more details.

Just to toss in my two cents here, I have both a Deccan Masterpiece and Venu's modified Wality piston-filler and I can attest that both are wonderful pens. Very different pens: the Deccan is, as Hari says, hand-made by people who obviously care deeply about the fountain pen as an experience. That care is evident when you use the pen. The Schrieber starts as a mass-produced pen, but Venu has put a level of craftsmanship into it that I think few production pens ever see. It's also a fine writing experience. I think you would find the equal of either pen from another part of the world would be very much more expensive.

Does Schrieber modify their President and Sleek fountain pens offered for sale at Swisher pens? It would be nice to see a review or even get some information on the size, nibs etc. on these pens that look quite attractive and are reasonably priced. They are also readily available in North America, which sadly is not the case for many other Indian pens.

Hari and Jai,

Thanks to your wonderful reviews and pictures, I have been hooked onto Indian ebonite pens. I have purchased Ratnam 203 and Guider pens and awaiting delivery from my family member from Mumbai.

Now, I am looking for Deccan pens. I liked, Deccan Maxi and Masterpiece pens that Jai had posted. I am curious to know about the price for these pens. I have a friend going to Hydrabad in February, who may be able to bring pens for me.

Looking forward to your responses. Once again, thank you for sharing wonderful images of your pens.

Hari and Shrujaya,

I have seen pictures of both of yours Deccan Masterpiece. I have noticed that one of the pens has gold ring on the cap and gold clip, while the other does not have a ring and the clip is silver.

Are these two different models?

Thanks guys...gave me much to look at and to plan ahead for.

I am going on a diet, one pen per month.

Right......

Thanks Hari. So I suppose we can customize minor details such as gold rings on the cap and the clip color, meaning gold vs silver. Right?

I bought 2 Schrieber Sleek pens (one green, one brown ripple) from the recent Swisher sale. They are 15cm long, 1.1cm at largest diameter. The ripple ebonite finish is beautiful. Swisher's description has the nibs as Medium but my green Sleek writes like a true (vintage) medium with hint of flex, the brown an Extra Fine-Fine (no flex but not hard like nail either). Since receiving them 2 weeks ago, I have filled them with Pelikan Royal Blue. They write readily and wet, and always start immediately. I would say these pens are excellent writers for little money .

That sounds really cool. After you use them awhile, you should write a review. One thing that would be of interest is if the nibs have anything stamped on them. In other words, are they Wality nibs or IPG (Iridium Point Germany) nibs? I hope they write as good as they look.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
