Your favorite fountain pen under $20.00

The Hero 330. Just picked one up for .01 cent plus $6.95 shipping on Ebay.

These are beautiful writers in my experience.

Wow. It just dawned on me that I paid 695 times as much for shipping as for the pen itself! :headsmack:

I'm still OK with that.... I think.....

Hero 389. $12.99 at ISellPens.com.

Always starts. Great balance and weight. And a beautiful looking nib. Perfect for my planner with a nice, fine line.

I'd have to second the recommendation for Wality. I've had two, the 52 and the piston-fill 69L. The 69L started leaking after a while (ink was seeping behind the piston) and I had to chuck it. However, the 52 is still going strong, and the nib and the ebonite feed make for a excellent everyday writer.

I've actually bought 5 user grade Parker "51"s at under $30 on ebay. I'm not saying it is typical, but they do come up once in a while. Now THAT's a great $30 pen!

Ron

I have to agree with Ron!

I got a Parker 51 and several Parker Duofolds/Slimfolds (the English version) at 15-25 Euros. Available at Ebay UK.

Same with Lamy 27 at under 15 Euros. This one at Ebay Germany - takes a while but I got several 27s within this year.

They are nice pens for everyday use, with smooth gold nibs. Goes with any bottled ink you like.

If you are very lucky you can even get a vintage Pelikan 400 at under 30 Euros (Germany).

Under 40 is no problem and only a question of patience. :)

Wow, as the topic starter, I am surprised to see how this topic has continued. So, I thought I would do a little cut and paste, and Excel sorting and give kind of a list of what people have said. The list probably isn't complete as it was a very quick job on my part, but here they are. FPN members favorite under $20 fountain pens.

Great shopping list!

Let me add one not mentioned... a Stypen school pen picked up in France. Have not seen any over here like it. (I understand Bic bought them?)

My current favorite under $20 however is the Wing Sung 237.

I'd have to say that the Duke Mako has been an excellent pen. Very nice for the $20 I spent on it.

The Rotring Core is greta too.

I'm waiting on an order from isellpens.com of a couple of Walitys and a Hero. Each one of these was under $10. I'll let you know as soon a FedEx finally gets them to me.

Hero 616. It sits in the cup next to an inked 51, but I find I reach for the Hero more. Actually, I reach for a Wality 69L more than the Parker, but that is just personal preference.

Whoops, discovered the Pelikan Future, and now it is my carry pen. (Retired the 69L for artesian well problems.)

YMMV

Well, I decided to order a batch of under $20 fountain pens. (I ordered some new inks recently, and needed some pens to put them in? How's that for a justification?) I played around on I Sell Pens for hours, and decided on:

  • Duke Silver Filigree Ruby @ $16.99 USD
  • Kaigelu #317 Lime Green @ $8.00 USD
  • Hero #M62 - New Waves - Gold @ $7.00 USD
  • Hero 329 - Red @ $4.99 USD
  • Sport FP GREEN @ $11.99 USD
  • Naki -- Mini Fountain Pen - Green Swirl @ $5.99 USD
  • Wing Sung #230 @ $3.00 USD

I decided based on the lists here and just the looks of the pens. Can't wait to get them and play!

Pelikan Level 65/1 (depending upon where marketed, it's either a 1 or a 65) for $10.99 shipped. My sumgai of sumgai's. For non-sumgai pens under $20, Pilot 78G is frequently available for under $20, and the Hero 616 is always available for under $20.

Worship......I mean, buy the Pelikano.

Pelikan pens are absolutely addicting :puddle:

Ball-point pens are only good for filling out forms on a plane.

A 329 for $5. Plus 5c etc for the brown paper bag to smooth the nib on...

My fav inexpensive pens have to be the Parker Jotter, old Sheaffer school pens, and the Pilot 78G. The Pilot feels the best, but I've had wonderful luck with the Parkers and Sheaffers, owning a few of each.

KawecoSport - writes good evrywhere, anytime, even on an airplane. It's a small pocket pen that does not require special care. Mine is made out of sturdy silver-metallic plastic. I got it from Swisher Pens for $9.99.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
