Retro 1951

Hey guys,

I know this is a brand that is not oft spoken of 'round here, but has anyone else tried a Retro 1951 fountain pen recently? Since they changed from the nibs marked "Schmidt Iridium Point" to the one marked "Retro 51" they write so much better. OMG! they are smoother and the nib seems so much more... substantial. Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone know who is making their nibs now? I have gotten a couple of their scriptmasters and two Tornados and they are just great ( I have two of the older Tornados and the difference is night and day). Ok, maybe it's just me.

Well that's interesting...I recently bought a Blue Curaco FP and it's supposed to be a rather new model...but my nib still says Schmidt. Still I haven't had any problems with the nib...it's plain steel but it writes quite wetly and smoothly with no fuss. I've got a fine on mine.

I got a Cognac (the brown, black, and cream) and an all black. The cognac had too much black in it and looks a little disappointing (My rollerball is gorgeous) so I leant it to a Co-worker to infect her. If it doesn't get back, I have an excuse to get another Cognac.

The ones I bought last year (around Christmas 2003) had the schmidt nib. The ones I hav bought in 2005 say Retro 51. Hmm... I didn't buy any Retros in 2004. Must've been an oversight. The good thing is that the nibs interchangable, so I can put the nib I like best on the pens I like best.

Yes, but the scriptmaster uses the same nib. The scriptmaster is a little bigger (nearly the same size as my Pellikan M800, but more tapered shape) But the ones named after drinks (Curaco, Cognac, etc) are Tornados.

Thanks Kevin,

are they lacquered over metal, or is it some kind of resin. The cognac and curaco look lovely. Do they come with a converter ?

I lent out my Cognac, so I can't check right now, but all the solid colors are metal (looks like steel - the trim is actually the body with the lacquer over part of the outside The cap band is part of the cap, not a separate piece, as you can tell by looking inside the cap) I don't think they come with a converter, but I have a blue million standard converters lying around anyway since it takes the standard cartridge. The scriptmasters are Cellulose Acetate. But the Cognac and Curaco are really a separate line, so their construction might be different from the solid colors, but if I were to guess, I would say they are steel as well. I will say this, they do hold up well to the abuse of being tossed around an office, a planner, a messenger bag, or a briefcase.

Mines didn't come with a converter. The cap and body are resin, and thus the pen is quite light. My one major gripe about it though is that the body is too short. You pretty much have to post the cap to use it, at which point, the pen feels top heavy, with that huge knurled top Retro 51s have.

  • 1 month later...

I just saw this older thread. I just received a blue Retro 51 Tornado FP and I love the way it writes. It has the nib marked Retro 51. It writes better than my new Monteverde!

Schmidt has a good reputaion for making good quality nibs and is the nib maker of choice for Filcao and quite a number of other smaller companies, even though they may not say Schmidt I am pretty sure they are still the maker of the "Retro 51" nibs.

Schmidt themselves have continued to make improvements in their nibs over the past few years and what was always good has just gotten better methinks.

When it comes to nib making on a mass scale there's Bock and Schmidt who provide the bulk of nibs to other smaller manufacturers while the giants still produce their own nibs for most of their models.

I am really impressed with the look and the reviews I am hearing about the Retro 51 lineup and if I was a new pen buying kind of guy, this would be pens I would be considering.

Their new 88 model, which seem to be their flagship model, seem pretty attractive. Temptations, temptations, ...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
