Penpalace;

The second shot does not look like any Sheaffer I know.

Roger,

The pictures with the coral wahl on the 1st page of this thread, not the two desk sets on this page. That and I've handled the particular desk set when the former owner had purchased it at a pen gathering in Toronto, its a Sheaffer base.

On a side note hope you get the chance to make it to Ohio this year.

I was referring to the pic ^. Looks like Sheaffer pen with a non Sheaffer base

Pearce;

You mean the one with the panther? If not Whal maybe a Conklin - not likely a Sheaffer however, I'm told that Sheaffer did have a Panther/Cougar base but I've no documentation to back that up at all - might just be a matter of finding the documentation...

As to the question Pepin was clearly refering to the fish base page 2 and I agree that the pen looks to be Sheaffer.

As to Ohio, I'm afraid finances won't allow.

Is anyone aware of a source for the large ball and socket hinges that connect the pen holders to the base? The only new ones I've been able to locate are very small compared to those shown here. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't think you are going to find any new production ball and socket units to match. I buy up old bases with chipped and broken marble and pull the ball and socket units from them. In some cases, the threaded protrusion from the ball is broken; these I drill out and replace with brass threaded rod.

I just found these posts and viewed with admiration Cliff's sets. As I have a number of them I will try to post pics soon of some sets I own that are not already pictured. I have been concentrating on desk sets in general for years and use them extensively in my office and home. My double Wahl Doric sets with pen and pencil are always in use and I have been fortunate to have found a number of nice examples. So stay tuned. I will try to get some pics soon. Don

I don't normally venture into the Wahl forum, but just ventured over because I'm waiting for my first Skyline to arrive in the post. I'm glad I did just so that I could look at all the stunning desk sets in this topic. Wow!

The Bantam desk set is not as pretty or as dear as some in this thread, but I like this one.

I have another, but this is the only one I have a picture of, shown with a standard size Skyline.

Not the greatest photo... I left my desk sets at home when I went to college so I can't take shots at the moment

Just thinking about something I saw at a local shop, its a black Doric desk pen with two carved polar bears on a piece of polished rock. I had thought it was something that was made by a independent artisan but was something like this in the Wahl desk set catalog? They are asking $150US for it which is a bit above my interest level unless someone tells me its a rare item and a steal. They I may reconsider. I don't have any pictures of it. I found one reference on FPN about an "Eskimo" series of desk pens from the 20s.

Thanks,

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
