Desk Sets?

Desk Sets are often overlooked, or maybe looked upon as a reasonable cost source for pen parts. But some are truly beauties and very period indicative from that Art Deco, Art nouveau time frame when they were made. Here a few neat ones to kick off a show and tell of what all you may want to post for us all to see:

And here is the first Desk Set Wahl offered for the Christmas season of 1926\\

And another in Greek Key All Metal:

And here are a few with commercial usage like the the Major Zipper company mascot.

Sure! But I only have one desk set (due to lack of space) I'm afraid!

Ahh, my favorite desk set Syd.

It's been a while since I posted this but it still sits at the head of my desk. My time-telling green marble Wahl Oxford desk set.

The attention to details in these early Wahls cannot be praised enough. Thank you for sharing.

I am going to try to add a few desk sets from my collection. I will start with the Carlton Ware bases. I haven't uploaded any photos yet, so we may just end up with links rather than actual photos.

Let me try this again. Here are some small bases with interesting silk screening. I will add some more with another posting.

Here is the final batch of bases. I have lots more, but I don't have them photographed yet. Hope you enjoy these.

And here are five different "Doll House" desk sets using Bantam barrels - both round and faceted "Doric" style.

Hey Cliff,

Great sets. Truly amazing. And from somewhere deep in my soul I know that it's for the best that you won this set instead of myself. It's for the best right? I'll convince myself later....smiling

Like many of the rarer Wahl-Eversharp pieces, I have never seen these catalogued or in an ad. My guess is late 20s through early 30s, but stand to be corrected. Syd?

I am trying to find a Wahl base without a pen for a No. 7205 Bronze Green Desk pen as described in the 1929 catalog.

Any ideas as to sources. I will be at the NY Pen show.

Thanks

So the double Wahl desk set that I won on the bay has not arrived as of yet but at the last pen meeting I was offered this lovely sooooo what to do?

Well I guess I did it. The base I figure is a Sheaffer but it does fit and will do for now.

I can't seem to get the pictures to upload so here is a Flickr link

I cannot look at all of these without responding. Each and every one of the desk sets is so impressive alone, but all of them together leaves me nearly speechless. Thank you for showing these treasures! What a pleasure to see so many!

Here's mine:

The nib says 'Eversharp Gold Seal Flexible'. It's the same black veined marble as ihimlen's above!

A nice thing about desk sets is that the pen is ready to go at once. No unscrewing of caps! If you're sitting and thinking about what to write you can insert the pen back in its holder and it won't dry out. So if you're like me and like to think and think and then write, a desk pen is very nice.

Philm,

Is the second picture of an all original Sheaffer desk set? The holder doesn't seem to be a correct match for the desk pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
