Fineline

A family friend from Chicago occasionally sends packages and my mother told her to keep her eyes out for fountain pens. So, the poor woman who is a quart low sometimes, sent a bunch of fountain pen bits in the package before last. However, while I was away at Boston, we received a couple new pens that had their nibs and everything. One doesn't fill so I assume there's something wrong with the sac - it's a Windsor. Don't know anything about that particular brand, although it has a nice looking 14k gold plated nib.

 

The second pen, I was just cleaning. It previously had just about a violet color in it and it says Fineline on the clip. I got it so that it does water-fill. I was just wiping it off when I see: W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company printed on it. I don't know why I didn't look before at the imprints- perhaps because the other pen didn't have one so I just went ahead on this one without looking at it. So I was pleasantly surprised to find that my family's friend in Chicago actually sent a pen that was made by one of the recognizable brands/marques. Can anyone tell me about this pen and any precautions I should take when cleaning it? If the sac fills does it really need to be replaced? The nib screws out - I srubbed a bit of gunky ink buildup with a soft toothbrush and got the threads clean and then screwed it back in. I'm too lazy to go to photobucket to post all the pictures at once so I'll just do it one by one in seperate posts.

 

P.S.: The woman who sends us packages of stuff always sends lots and lots of stuff with price tags left on - that's the kind of woman she is.. kind of annoying. So I know how much she payed for them - she got the two pens for $5 - one was 2 and the other 3, but I can't remember which. Either way, an excellent deal, perhaps, for a nice Sheaffer pen, I think.

I believe they were a cheaper line for Sheaffer. I bought one recently and it writes well, but is obviously of lesser quality. When I asked about them on this site, I didn't get any answers except from Andy.

I've got a Green and a Black Fineline like your model. I need to sack both. I did dip them and they write just fine. Both of mine have the "323" fine stainless nibs.

 

I bought them because of that Fat Streamliner Deco look.

 

I agree, the quality isn't close to Sheaffer's of the same era, but they are fun pens none the less. Enjoy!

For being in the lower end of sheaffer's price range these are great writing pens. I think yours comes from the later 40's & on through the 50's. I'm not 100% sure but something in the rusted memory files of my brain tells me thats pretty close to the mark.

 

A cool feature of these pens. (if yours is the model i'm thinking of) is the nibs on these unscrew and are interchangeable like esterbrooks & pelikans. I'm almost 100% certain that estie nibs will fit these pens as well.

 

I've got a few floating around here somewhere, think I'll have to dig them out & take a look one of these days.
